Particles of Invasion
by Berlin-based artist Shira Wachsmann,
24 Feb. – 3 Mar. 2018
Opening: Saturday 4 pm, 24 Feb. 2018 in Sarang Building, Yogyakarta.
Organized by Kersan Art Foundation collaborates with OFCA International and PartNER Yogyakarta, we invite Shira Wachsmann for a two months artist-in-residence in Yogyakarta. In Wachsmann’s works, she focuses on the notion of “land,” in both meanings: land as material, as soil, and land as a place, as territory; land as natural and cultural, political and historical. Her practice is based on a thorough investigation of historical documents. She integrates her findings in her works in order to critically expose the historical foundations of ideologies that even when forgotten or repressed, still construct identities today.

Shira Wachsmann (b. 1984 in Tel Aviv) studied at the Berlin Weissensee School of Art.
Her works reveal multilayered relation to the notion of land, in both meanings: land as earth, and land as a place, land as natural and cultural. For her, natural materials such as soil, metal, coal, straw and plants convey history, and the forms and materials she uses in her work refer to sanctuaries and rituals. While confronting with biblical and philosophical ideas, Wachsmann thematizes the concept of "home", and how this topos can provide insights into the origination of identity.‬ Shira lives and works in Berlin, Germany.
